Superfood is a non medical term popularised in the media to refer to foods that can have health promoting properties such as reducing someone's health risks or improving any aspects of physical or emotional health. So called superfoods may have an usually high content of antioxidants, vitamins or other nutrients. Superfoods are foods mostly plant based but also some fish and dairy products that are thought to be nutritionally good for one'side health. In this article, we will know about some Indian superfoods and their benefits.
Turmeric - This spice is available in every Indian household and finds its use in almost every dish that is cooked in our kitchen. The bright yellow colour lends a beautiful look to any dish. We have incorporated turmeric in our food so well that the food seems incomplete without the warm yellowness of it. According to ayurvedic practices, turmeric has many medicinal properties including strengthening the overall energy of the body, relieving gas, dispelling warms, improving digestion, regulating menstruation, dissolving gallstones and relieving arthritis. Many south Asian countries use it as an antiseptic for cuts, burns and bruises, and as an antibacterial agent. Turmeric paste is applied to the skin to get glowing skin and to keep away the harmful bacteria from the body.
Honey - In ayurveda, honey is used for both internal and external uses. It is mainly used for eye disease, cough, thirst, phlegm, hiccups, blood in vomit, leprosy, diabetes, obesity, worm infestation, vomiting, asthma, diarrhoea, and healing wounds. It is also used as a natural preservative and sweetener in many ayurvedic preparations. It should also be kept in mind that fresh honey helps to increase body mass while old honey produces constipation and decreases body mass. Honey should not be heated or consumed warmed as it causes toxic effect. Cold honey should be always preferred.
Tulsi - Easy to grow and widely found in the Indian subcontinent, Tulsi is not only a holy plant in Hinduism; it also finds its place in the ancient science of ayurveda. Tulsi is commonly found in two varieties - he green coloured tulsi and the purple coloured tulsi. Apart from the Indian subcontinent, it can also be found in tropical regions of most southeast Asian countries. The essential oil found in tulsi, effectively act on our respiratory system. It is rich in antioxidants which help in mitigating stress and conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and so on. Tulsi has linoleic acid which is extremely beneficial for skin. Tulsi leaves have volatile and fixed oils which can help fight allergies, infections and pathogens.
